MON-ROSS Trailblazers running club member Gavin Jones has won huge congratulations from fellow runners after completing the Merthyr Mawr Rabbit Run 65km Ultra on Saturday to raise money for a dog rescue charity.

After months of dedicated training, Gavin tackled over 40 miles of sand dunes, beaches and coastal trails, finishing in an incredible 23rd place in 9:32:40. An amazing achievement!

The challenge was all in support of Hope Rescue, the charity that introduced Gavin to his dog, Jen. Hope Rescue is the leading dog welfare charity in South Wales which has given a fresh start to thousands of dogs over the past 21 years. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, Gavin has already raised an incredible £960.

“We’re incredibly proud of you, Gav – now enjoy a well-earned rest… before you start planning the next adventure,” said a club spokesperson.

The ultra marathon was a new addition to the popular Merthyr Mawr Rabbit Run and gave runners have the chance to run on the private grounds of the Merthyr Mawr Estate and through the Merthyr Mawr Warren National Nature Reserve, wade across its famed river crossing and tumbling down the Big Dipper – the highest sand dune in Wales.

The new ukltra marathon saw participants running along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast with dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and breathtaking views with highlights including Ogmore River, Ogmore Beach, Southerndown, Dunraven Bay, and the picturesque village of Monknash. Ultra runners go even further, adding a scenic loop through Llantwit Major.

Established in 2016, the Rabbit Run one of South Wales’ most popular trail events which started life as a a 7.2-mile event organised by Bridgend Athletics and the Estate, it expanded significantly after partnering with Run 4 Wales in 2024 to include marathon and ultra-distance options
