A SUPERB unbeaten century from Tom Vickers led Monmouth Cricket Club's second team to a crushing 93-run home victory against Machen Seconds in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League.
The 17-year-old Monmouth School batsman cracked a run-a-ball 123 not out, containing 14 fours and a six, to lead Monmouth to 211 for six from 45 overs in last Saturday's (23rd June) Division Three clash.
The returning Jonathan Davies blazed 36 from 40 balls in his first outing for six seasons after answering an SOS from brother-in-law Dave Wilding.
Machen made a positive start to their innings and were 80 for two, despite a fine 10-over spell from James Taylor (one for 18 from 10).
However, Monmouth's spin trio of Rick Parkes (two for 14), Mike Turner (two for 28) and Callum Philpott (one for 25) then instigated a Machen collapse.
Martin Newell (three for eight) also weighed in for a rampant Monmouth, sponsored by Ancre Hill Vineyard, as Machen closed well short, finishing on 118 for nine.
Both teams had observed a minute's silence before the start of play in honour of former Glamorgan batsman Tom Maynard, who died last week.
And Monmouth's players used the club's new Bowcom Bowdry water clearance machine, bought with support from Glamorgan CCC's SWALEC Community Development Fund, for the first time after a pre-match shower had soaked the cricket square.
The match balls were sponsored by club photographer Mike Roberts and JD Wetherspoon.
Dave Wilding's second team host struggling Llantwit Fadre at the Sports Ground this Saturday as they reach the mid-way point in their league campaign.
