LONG-serving 2nds skipper Neil Saunders has stood down from his role at Monmouth Cricket Club.
The popular all-rounder enjoyed nine successful seasons at the helm, firstly as 3rds captain and then, latterly, as 2nds skipper.
At the club’s well-attended AGM at Monmouth Rugby Club, Saunders confirmed his decision to take a well-deserved break from captaincy duties.
Taking over from Neil, who made his Monmouth debut under Grant Pendleton’s leadership in the Marches League in 1998, will be wicketkeeper-batter Andrew Dobbie.
Scotsman Pete Keay continues as 1sts captain after his troops stormed to the 2025 Division 7 title with 14 wins from 18 matches.
Chris Powles has stepped down after three seasons as 3rds skipper, while Ashley Burdett is new captain of the women’s hard-ball and soft-ball teams.
Life member Gordon Grey remains as president, while Mike Maguire continues as chairman of Monmouth CC, sponsored by Bürkert Fluid Control Systems.
Maguire will continue to work alongside vice-chairman Pablo Nayager, treasurer Nick Holt, secretary Dave Walters, and junior coordinator Andrew Hurd in making the thriving club an even more welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable environment for juniors, seniors and volunteers.
The club paid tribute to the work and commitment of outgoing safeguarding officer Lesley Saunders, who was supported in her role by Jane Brennan, Maguire and Jill Jones.
She is being replaced by Christine Nayager, the wife of versatile vice-chairman Pablo, who is also the club’s league representative alongside Walters.
Life member Delyth Harris continues as club representative on the Monmouth Sports Association committee alongside Holt.
The committee also thanked outgoing women’s hardball captain Helen McGloin and softball skipper Kay Cooper.
Meanwhile, indoor training continues this Sunday (February 15) – at a different venue – Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Sports Club in Hadnock Road – for women and seniors: 11am to 1pm.
