Monmouth sprinter Ryan Lee was rewarded for his fine form in the 400m with a call-up to represent Great Britain.

The Monmouth Comprehensive School pupil had been selected by Welsh Athletics to compete in the 4x400m at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium.

But last Thursday (16th May) Ryan had a phone call from one of the Great Britain junior selectors asking him to be in their squad instead.

Ryan could not turn this opportunity down. He still travelled up to Loughborough with the Welsh squad then met up with his new team mates and was given his full GB kit.

Ryan competed in the 400m and the 4x400m for GB juniors, which consists of elite athletes who are under the age of 20.

Ryan was drawn in lane seven and after 300m was in eighth place, but as with recent races he pulled back to fourth at the finish with yet another personal best of 48.10 seconds.

Two 10ths of a second separated the top four. Ryan's aim is to race the current Welsh number one who ran in the previous heat in a time of 48.90 so things will be very interesting when they line up together.

The relay saw the GB juniors finish in fourth place and Ryan ran a good second leg.

Ryan still can't quite believe how things have moved on in recent weeks and to represent Great Britain at this stage in his career was never in his thoughts, the GB selectors will soon announce their team to compete in Ukraine so fingers crossed.

On Saturday, Ryan will compete at an inter-regional event at Spyty park Newport.
