Although not quite a local derby there is a special kind of rivalry between Monmouth and Ross Senior Golfers, partly as a consequence of the transfer of allegiances in the playing ranks. The inclement weather foiled this fixture earlier in the season and on the occasion of the re-arranged encounter at Leasbrook Lane the competition was somewhat heightened by the inclusion of three ex-Monmouth Golf Club members in the Ross team. David Crocker, Phil McFarlane and Dai Harries were returning in Ross colours to compete on familiar fairways against their old club. Beneath blue skies and on a course in prime condition, eight four-balls enjoyed good-spirited golfing tussles. The outcome favoured the home team by an emphatic six-and-a-half points to one-and-a-half but the winners tried to be magnanimous in victory mindful of the fact that when they play the return fixture in September at Ross the fortunes may well be reversed.
