MORE than 50 swimmers from the Monmouth area took part in a record breaking annual championships at the Monnow Swimming Club last month.

The swimmers, aged between seven and 17, competed over distances ranging from 25m to 200m in backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and individual medleys.

An impressive 25 club records were broken by nine different swimmers.

These individual achievements were celebrated at the club awards ceremony with the presentation of medals and trophies to each age group winner.

Eight swimmers who had represented the club consistently throughout the season were also recognised.

The Most Improved Swimmer of 2014 was 12 year old Sam Finighan and the Coaches' Award, given to the swimmer who has shown the most commitment and best attitude during the year, was presented to Lucy Creasey, aged 11.

Amy Peters was delighted to receive an Extraordinary Achievement Award in recognition of her selection to train with the Welsh Paralympic Squad in Swansea.

The Club has also competed in several inter-club galas and open meets during the year, most recently the Greater Gwent Junior Development Meet at Newport International Sports Village.

Competing against young swimmers from all over South Wales, Matthew Ford (13) won a fantastic four golds and a silver in his five events, Lucy Creasey two golds and three silvers and Ben Ford a silver and two other top eight finishes.
