ANOTHER weekend fixture fell victim to a mixture of the weather and fixture clash at Penypound Stadium but Monmouth Town manager Andrew Smith was busy in the transfer window and is close to signing three or four new players.

The Kingfishers were dealt a blow however as winger Chris Ham signed for Welsh Premier Carmarthen Town and made his debut in their victory over Cefn Druids last Saturday.

Town's last sixteen Welsh League Cup game against Pontypridd Town is now scheduled for this Saturday (17th) at 1.30 at Penypound but Smith used the time off to check out some transfer targets, believed to include Corey Painter from Gwent County side Newport Corries, Lee Penry from Blaenavon Blues and Dale Howarth from Barry Town. Midfielder Sam Hunt is close to signing from Hereford based Pegasus FC.

Smith said "We need to strengthen as we're light in some areas and especially now Hammy has left for Carmarthen.

"Of course he goes with our good wishes and I hope he makes a real go of it. I'll be asking the same of new signings from Gwent County level as there are some good players around.

"The question is whether they are good enough to step up and stick at it."

Smith made light of controversy surrounding the fixture congestion that may face the club owing to repeated fixture clashes.

"Of course it's annoying and frustrating as we can't get a rhythm going. We haven't played a home league game since September, but on the plus side most of our remaining fixtures are at home. We just have to concentrate on what we do on the pitch."
