CHEPSTOW Town's 1sts were up for the Welsh Cup on Saturday, but while some games have been called off for bone-hard pitches, their first round match at Abertillery Bluebirds was scuppered by a more traditional waterlogging, specifically one of the goalmouths.

But the Jockeys' 2nds were riding high after a 5-3 win away to Abertillery Excelsiors 2nds lifted them top of the Gwent Premier Combination League after six games.

Bailey Hobbs put them 1-0 up after just two minutes, and Connor Hughes doubled the lead eight minutes later.

Excelsiors hit back for 2-1 on 25 minutes but Alfie Owen restored the two-goal buffer 10 minutes before the break.

Hughes with his second on 65 minutes made it 4-1, and although the hosts pulled one back six minutes later, sub Lucas Owen hit back just a minute later for 5-2.

Abertilley scored again on 78 minutes, but the Jockeys rode out any potential comeback to take all three points.

Upriver, and in the absence of a 1sts fixture, Redbrook Rovers 2nds fielded a strong side as they hosted Alvington Star 2nds in North Gloucestershire 3.

Despite penning the visitors in their own half for most of the first half, the hosts found themselves in a goalless stalemate at the break.

Both teams had chances, but the lion’s share fell to the Brook, with the Alvington keeper working tirelessly to keep things level.

Alvington then struck first almost immediately after the restart with a composed finish from close range.

This served as a wake-up call for the hosts, who responded rapidly when Gareth Clarke-Williams headed home a fine Zak Morgan corner to make it 1–1.

Just minutes later, Morgan registered his second assist, threading a precise through ball to Jake Teague, who slotted home brilliantly from 25 yards.

With Redbrook piling on pressure, Scott Windley struck past the keeper for 3-1 before Reuben Gonzalez capped off an emphatic second-half with a bullet header for the fourth.

Chepstow Town’s postponed Welsh Cup match at Abertillery Bluebirds has been rescheduled to this Saturday, September 26 (kick-off 2pm), when other matches include – Chepstow Town 2nds v New Inn Development, Underwood v Chepstow Town 3rds, Redbrook Rovers v Westbury United, Staunton & Corse 2nds v Redbrook Rovers 2nds, Riverside Rovers v Thornwell R&W, Sudbrook CC 2nds v Thornwell R&W 2nds, Caldicot Castle 2nds v Tintern Abbey.
