MONMOUTH Town FC endured a mixed weekend, with the 1sts suffering a Gwent County Senior Cup spot-kick knockout after drawing at Sifil AFC, while the newly-launched Women enjoyed their first home win firing a magnificent seven the following day.
Having gone out of the Welsh Cup the previous weekend 2-0 at Pontarddulais, the Kingfishers were hoping for better luck in the first round of the Gwent Cup, having gone all the way to the final in 2024 and beaten Sifil 3-0 on their own Newport ground earlier in the season.
Town dominated the majority of Saturday’s game, but couldn’t turn their possession into goals as the hosts soaked up the pressure to draw 0-0 and send the game to penalties.
Having not had much to deal with all game, Monmouth keeper Jack Harris then found himself forced into action.
And despite Taylor Street converting from the spot, his teammates didn’t follow suit, with the Kingfishers crashing out 3-1 in the shootout.
The 2nds also suffered a tough away trip to Caldicot Town Reserves in East Gwent Division 1 action, losing 2-0 to The Swans.
The Monmouth Town sides in action on Sunday fared better though, with wins for the Women and Youth sides.
Firstly, the Women welcomed Coed Eva Athletic Ladies to the Monmouth Sports Ground in a match that started closely before the home side ran away with it.
Both sides had chances at goal in the first half hour, but neither could break the deadlock until the home side found the opener through Grace Odrovakavula in the 36th minute.
The Kingfishers maintained their 1-0 advantage to half-time and came out looking to extend their lead in the second 45 minutes.
And that was exactly what they did just four minutes into the second period, with Keegan Marks teed up by Rosie Bennett to score the second.
Coed Eva did get themselves back into the game just under ten minutes later, but Odrovakavula restored the two-goal lead in the 61st minute after a great solo run.
The hosts continued to push forward and scored a fourth in the 72nd minute through Jessica Stoddard with Bennett getting her third assist of the game.
And the match ended with three late goals, with Odrovakavula securing her hat-trick and Bennett and Stoddard one apiece for a 7-1 win, sparking celebrations for a first home win since their formation at the start of this season.
The Youth also celebrated a 4-2 win away to Chepstow U18s later in the day, including a hat-trick from Lucas Harris and a goal from Albert Escott.
This weekend, Monmouth Town return to Gwent Premier League action away to Cefn Fforest on Saturday with the 2nds welcoming Caldicot Castle to the Monmouth Sports Ground in the first round of the Benevolent Cup.
On Sunday, the Women are at home to Undy Women 2nds in a league match whilst the U18s are on the road against Llanyrafon Junior U18s in the Youth League Cup.
