Chepstow Rugby Club welcomed RTB Ebbw Vale to the Upton Memorial Ground this weekend hoping to capitalise on the previous week's cup win over Llanilleth.
Conditions were again dry and conducive to running rugby. After a somewhat lacklustre warm up, Chepstow took to the field in a rather sluggish manner.
The young RTB side were quick to latch on to this and started well, scoring a try in the first five minutes.
Something in the team spirit changed as the game went on though and Chepstow, through agile number ten Daniel Chui, broke through underneath the uprights. Jarrod Bluck converted making it 7-5 Chepstow.
An injury meant that Jack Groves took to the field to make his first team debut and made an instant impression.
The Chepstow eight seemed to settle and get it together a little from here on in, Kristian Mason and James Moles again leading by example.
A period of continued pressure lead to Ben Horder holding off four players to finish a brilliant solo effort, making it 12-5 Chepstow.
RTB seemed to deflate a little from here on in and the exuberance of youth was no longer enough to carry them through.
Jarrod Bluck pounced and scored a five metre try just before the stroke of half time taking it to 17-5.
Chepstow took to the field in the second half against the elements. After a quiet ten minute period of mid-field stalemate, Chepstow broke the deadlock with a well worked move, putting Andy Morris away to score in the corner.
With the score at 22-5 to the home side, Chepstow introduced Connor Doz and Simon Gappa for the last fifteen minutes.
With fresh legs, Chepstow again upped the pace and on the stroke of the 80th minute Jack Groves capped a solid performance with his debut try.
The match ended 27-5 to Chepstow.
Man of the match was a difficult decision with performances from Groves, Moles, Chui and Horder all consdered. It was Kristian Mason who was given the award though for a full blooded display and excellent work at the ruck.
Chepstow now have a long league lay off until an away fixture with Ynysddu on 6th December but have a couple of Friday night fixtures arranged, first of which is St Julians at home on 21st November.
