South East Wales Cricket League Division One (Second XI) - Chepstow CC Second XI (203-4) beat Welsh Asians (199 all out) by six wickets

DIVISION One leaders Chepstow Seconds fielded a mixture of experience and youth for this top-of-the-table clash.

With five of the team still in their early to mid-teens it was experience which coped with the talented visitors who won at Sudbrook seconds last month.

After 15-year-old Dylan Sillence and 16-year-old Lewys Jones took two wickets each to cut through the early wickets, skipper Huw Rogers weighed in with 4-27 including three maidens in his nine overs and Jon Roberts finished off the tail-enders with 2-28.

Sillence struck early, having opener Mohammed Sadique caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonathan Huws without scoring and then the same double act saw the end of number three batsman Samir Sadique.

Khalid Idris made an important 59 before Roberts, furiously back-pedalling down the slope, took a good catch to end his resistance for Rogers’ first wicket.

Three quick wickets fell thanks to Rogers and Jones but Hassan Salim (27) tried his best to set a total of over 200.

In the last five overs, a superb diving catch by Ryan Scrivens gave Roberts his first wicket before Muhammad Rehman became his second, trapped leg before wicket.

All six Chepstow batsmen who took their place at the crease, made double-figure scores in the run chase, Jamie Rayner making 37 and Tuhin Gavand 51 before Roberts (68) and Huws (11) saw them home with seven overs left.

“It was a good game played on a wicket which offered help to batsmen and bowlers alike,” Rogers said later.

“There was a good opening spell from Dylan (2-33) which put us in control.

“Lewys Jones bowled well despite not feeling well and Jon Roberts helped us to control some spirited tail-enders.

“The bowlers were backed up by some quality catching with Tuhin Gavand taking three grabs.

“Jamie Rayner and Ryan Scrivens coped well with some early pace and movement and Jon Roberts was patient, punishing bad deliveries to see us through to a deserved victory.”
