BEN Kellaway and the England Lions team secured an eight-wicket win over an Australian Prime Minister's XI Down Under on Saturday.
It was the second Lions match in a row for the 21-year-old Chepstow all-rounder, who scooped this year's Glamorgan CCC Player of the Year award.
The Lions' bowlers fought back admirably against the Prime Minister's XI on day one of the two-day pink-ball day-night match in Canberra.
The PM's XI were 231-2 shortly after the dinner break before the Lions took six wickets for just 59 runs under the floodlights, leading the hosts to declare on 308-8.
Captain Tom Haines, Durham fast bowler Matthew Potts and Lancashire spinner Tom Hartley took two wickets apiece for the tourists, with Leicestershire left-arm quick Josh Hull and Warwickshire all-rounder Jacob Bethell claiming one each.
Chepstow CC's Kellaway, who uniquely bowls spin with either arm, bowled seven overs for 34 runs.
Nottinghamshire fast bowler Josh Tongue, released to play from the Ashes squad, also went wicketless but bowled with high pace and improved his control over the day, conceding 30 runs from his first six overs but only 18 from his last 10.
Tongue, 28, is the most likely candidate to replace Mark Wood for the second Ashes Test which starts in Brisbane on Thursday, with the Durham fast bowler set to miss out because of concerns over his left knee.
Lions openers Emilio Gay and Sussex's Haines then survived to the close trailing by 278 runs on 30-0.
The duo pushed that to 114-0 on day two before Durham's Gay retired hurt after feeling his hamstring when turning for a run.
That brought Bethell to the crease – the spare batter in England's Ashes squad, who was released with bowlers Tongue and Potts to play in the two-day match.
But he failed to push his claim for a place in the Test team, striking two fours off veteran Australia seamer Peter Siddle, before falling tamely for 16, caught behind off left-armer Campbell Thompson.
Captain Haines fell soon after for 77 to leave the Lions 172-2, but Somerset's James Rew (92 not out) and Kellaway's Glamorgan team-mate Asa Tribe (53 not out) put on an unbroken 137 to get them to 309-2 in the final session.
