MONMOUTH Cricket Club fell to a 12-run defeat at home to Dinas Powys on Saturday, despite good performances from a number of Monmouth bowlers.
After visiting captain Lewis Clarke won the toss and elected to bat, Dinas got off to a slow but steady start as opening pair Gordon Hannah (12) and Lloyd Dimauro (12) were dismissed early by Paul Swingwood (3-42) leaving them at 32-2.
Ben Davies (2-21) was next to strike, dismissing Matthew Todd-Bennett (25) and Curtis Wingren (21) in quick succession to leave Dinas on 74-4.
But it was Sam Swingwood who enjoyed the best of the bowling figures, slicing through the middle order to finish on 4-46 with one maiden.
With the score of 159-8 looking like a reasonable target, a late cameo from Dinas Powys number nine Connor Hetherton boosted the visitors’ run rate, as he struck two fours and two sixes to record 31 off 19 balls before he was run out by Henry Breeze.
A handful of extra runs from tail enders Jack Houghton (7) and Alex Vowles (5 not out) helped Dinas Powys to a score of 195 all out from their 45 overs.
Other Monmouth bowling performances included Adam Roberts (0-31), James Taylor (0-22), Rajesh Kuttappu (0-18) and Ben Pilot (0-6).
In reply, Monmouth lost both their openers early on as Dinas Powys bowler Connor Hetherton dismissed Henry Breeze (17) and Matthew Jones (12) leaving the home side on 40-2.
Josh Grey (34) and captain Adam Roberts (34) were next in and steadied the ship somewhat, as they both hit six fours, but both fell in quick succession to leave the hosts on 109-4.
From there only contributions from Paul Swingwood (20), Ben Pilot (15) and Rajesh Kuttappu (15) helped Monmouth’s run rate before they finsihed on 183 all out from 44.1 overs.
Next Saturday (22nd July) Monmouth host Sully Centurions. Play starts at 1pm.
