CHEPSTOW Harriers hosted the penultimate Leisure Centre League cross country race at Piercefield Park on Sunday 21st February.
Their 48 runners had overwhelming success, with both the men’s and women’s top three teams beating their rivals in the club’s best result this season.
The juniors’ two kilometre and four kilometre races were also a big success, attracting 60 children of various ages, battling fierce winds, mud and hills.
The varied and challenging adult’s course included a knee-height water crossing, rough grassland, woodland and several energy-sapping undulations. The course was approximately seven kilometres for the women and 10 kilometres for the men.
There remains just one race left in the series at Pontypool Park in March. The ladies are now in joint first position with Lliswerry Runners, so it all comes down to the final race as to who will take the winning title. After today, the men look to secure their second position in the final race, behind Pontypool Runners.
Ladies team captain Niki Morgan said: “It was great to be able to put on a tough, varied course to challenge all runners and it was well received by the other nine clubs who took part.
“To have so many juniors participate in the shorter races was also very heartening. It was the icing on the cake for our club’s male and female A, B and C teams to win. I could not be more delighted.”
