Monmouth Town's dismal end to the season continued last Saturday (27th April) despite a penalty save and a host of good stops from Keiron Blackburn.

The Kingfishers simply ran out of gas and had Elliot Ford sent off against a Haverfordwest team who went top of the table with this ultimately comfortable 2-0 win.

Since going top of the league in March, the Town have only picked up six points from a possible 30 and the goals, a feature of any Monmouth Town game for an number of years, have simply dried up.

And yet, this wasn't a bad performance against one the form teams in the division with Town creating good openings and chances, and defending well enough despite missing Harrhy, Davies and Ashley Ford.

The first half was a pretty even affair with both sides clearly committed to the task and Haverfordwest knowing that another win was needed to keep their Welsh Premier dream alive.

That was reflected in some of the challenges, which were keen rather than mean.

The game changer was probably the sending off of Ford, who let his enthusiasm get the better of him in a challenge on the visiting keeper which deservedly drew red.

Seven minutes later Haverfordwest took the lead as an innocuous ball into the box caught everyone napping save the lively Haverfordwest striker, who poked home the loose ball.

As with the game against title challengers West End, 1-0 down with 10 men is a tall order for a form team but to their credit Town kept going.

A sublime piece of skill from Alderdice should have been rewarded with a goal but his finish rolled wide while moments earlier his flashing header had also narrowly cleared the bar.

Compton had a glorious chance to level things when clean through, but a combination of ring rust, youth and downright dithering meant he squared to Rob Laurie rather than pick any number of spots to finish.

Blackburn saved superbly from a Christopher free kick then guessed correctly to save the spot kick as the seconds ticked away but he was finally beaten again in the dying minutes as Haverfordwest wrapped up the game with a sublime finish.

Town must now dust themselves down as they face joint-top Taffs Well before visiting Ton Pentre next Saturday before bringing the curtain down on a long hard season with a first appearance in the Gwent Senior Cup Final since 1940 when the Kingfishers take on second Division Caldicot Town at Goytre FC on Tuesday 7th May at 6.15pm. All supporters needed and welcome.
