DEBUTANT left-arm swing bowler Owen Parris snapped up 4-26 in Monmouth Cricket Club's 119-run home win over Vale in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League. The former Chepstow player made an instant impact after signing for Monmouth in midweek and will be a very useful asset in the team's push for promotion from Division Three. Spinner Alim Hansraj (4-22 from 10 overs) was also in top form for Monmouth, who bowled out the Bridgend outfit for just 125 after they had posted 244-5 on another excellent pitch at the Sports Ground. Josh Grey (88) was in outstanding touch with the bat and looked on course for a second successive century until he was run out after a misfield. Jonathan Jones (47 not out), Hansraj (41 not out) and skipper Ben Turner (40) made vital contributions to push Monmouth to a respectable total after being put into bat. It was Monmouth's fourth successive league win and they remain third in the table, just behind table-topping Lisvane and second-placed Dinas Powys. Opener Matt Jones, former Chepstow player Matt Lovett and Taunton schoolboy Henry Breeze are likely to be available for Monmouth's trip to bottom-of-the-table Machen this Saturday (1pm start). Monmouth, who are sponsored by JD Wetherspoon, slipped to 64-3 in last Saturday's match after a tidy opening burst from Vale's Oliver Pike (1-40), who plays for Wales Under-17s. But Grey, who scored a half-century in Monmouth's first 67 runs on the board, repaired the damage with Turner and took the hosts to 148-4. Turner struck five fours and a six, while the superb Grey collected nine boundaries but not even a full-length dive could stop him from being agonisingly run-out. Jonathan Jones and Hansraj lifted the scoring rate in the final 10 overs with a host of boundaries in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 94 which put Monmouth in the driving seat on a hot afternoon. D Upham was the Bridgend outfit's most successful bowler, claiming 2-37. After the interval, Parris soon rattled the stumps with two swinging deliveries as Monmouth picked up early wickets. And Monmouth struck a major blow when wicketkeeper Jon Despontin held a sharp catch off the bowling of Neil Smith (1-36 from nine) to dismiss dangerman Billy Yates (15). Vale wicketkeeper Paul Sheppard (40) struck some excellent boundaries until he was removed by a magnificent return catch from Cardiff-based Hansraj, who is celebrating Ramadan. Aled Jones took 1-32, while Smith and Parris held catches before newcomer Parris returned to claim Vale's final wicket in the 37th over. Monmouth skipper Ben Turner thanked the reliable Trevor Slocombe for scoring the book and Mike Rouse for umpiring the match. • Monmouth Cricket Club hosted a very enjoyable representative match at the Sports Ground last Friday. The Wales Women's team posted 200-7 from 40 overs and then bowled out the Army Women's team for 79 in the 25th other. Club vice-chairman Ian Morgan thanked all the volunteers who helped make the day a success and is hoping Monmouth Cricket Club will host further Wales Women's team matches in the future.
