A NARROW but deserved win against a tough Albion Rovers side at the Sports Ground consolidated third place for Monmouth's high flying Kingfishers and sent a clear message to leaders Newport Civil Service, who lost their second game in a row, that the title race will go to the wire. The destination of the championship is now in the hands of Andrew Smith's young Monmouth team, who, although still sixteen points adrift of top spot, have five games in hand and will play host to the leaders in April in what could be a title decider. Saturday's game was marred by constant fouling and some poor refereeing which, at times, infuriated the home crowd, particularity as it seems minor Monmouth misdemeanours were more harshly punished than some ugly challenges made by a more experienced but at times outclassed Albion side. Two point blank saves by an inspired Albion 'keeper denied Monmouth a commanding early lead but a cool finish by Rogers on the half hour calmed some nerves and sent the home team into the half time break in a positive frame of mind. The second half however was peppered with more great chances and Town's profligacy looked like being punished when Albion equalised with twenty minutes remaining. It could have been worse as a blatant penalty appeal was waved away only for Roberts in the Monmouth goal to present Albion's striker with a gilt edged opportunity. Roberts made amends by pulling off a terrific stop. More Monmouth chances went begging as the Kingfisher attacks became increasingly desperate punctuated by another superb save from Dominy's drive until Bowen, chasing yet another seemingly lost cause, set up an opening for Rogers who toyed with the Albion defence and frayed the nerves of the home support before calmly slotting home the winner. Manager Smith was delighted with the result saying after the game "Results went with us again today and I was very happy with our own performance. We really stuck to the task which is to keep chalking off the victories. "Everyone in the squad now understands that if we keep winning we win the Gwent Championship for the first time in the Town's history and with it Welsh league status."
