SIR,
We would like to alert Beacon readers that they have until the end of September to see the show of all the photographic entries to Monmouth: Mucky or Magnificent? As the response was so good, the exhibition is being kindly hosted at three of our finest buildings simultaneously, the Library, the Shire Hall and the Museum foyer.
The standard of the photos was superb, as the judges made very clear at the presentation evening... the appreciation of our town unquestionable. We, the Monmouth Litter Group were hugely encouraged to contact so many like-minded locals, many of whom spontaneously pick up other people's litter rather than see it spoiling their favourite place. With the help of Keep Wales Tidy we are hoping to form a network of such people whose completely voluntary actions can be supported all year round.
How can you help? Monmouth Rotary Club is leading a litterpick on Friday 20th September in the Drybridge pond area. Do come if you can. It starts at 9.30am.
Meanwhile, we would like you to pinpoint any litter strewn corners you know about, on the map in the Shirehall section of the exhibition.
Even more importantly, please write your ideas there, of how the litter and dog waste problem in Monmouth, its riverbanks and green spaces can be tackled. Constantly fighting the problem is ridiculously expensive in Council taxes and manpower. We suspect many people will feel that shameful waste of precious resources and undermines those of us who want to be proud of our town.
