VOLUNTEERS from Bridges Community Centre have been honoured at the annual Monmouthshire Volunteer Achievement Awards. The volunteers were nominated as groups and as individuals, in recognition of their voluntary work and for making a real difference in their communities. Building Bridges, Community Connections and Bridges Social Circles were all acknowledged at the glamorous event, held this year, at the Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel, Llangybi, last Wednesday (10th September) and hosted by GAVO (Gwent Associations of Voluntary Organisations). David Stockwell and Molly Christie accepted the 'Service to the Community Group Award' on behalf of all the drivers and escorts that have helped with Bridges' Social Circles (previously COMIC) over the years. Stuart Patchin was the individual winner of the 'Caring in the Community' award. "Receiving this award was a real surprise," he said. "Hearing all the nice things that people said about me, nearly brought me to tears. I like to support people, and I just get on with it, but to think that I've helped so many people and built their spirit, was a really great thing." The Building Bridges North Monmouthshire Crew were winners in the 'Caring in the Community' group category. Sam Varley and Amelia Greenstreet accepted the award on behalf of their fellow crew members Bryony Judd, Angus Swanson and Matt Wheeler. Sam said: "It was really surprising to win. And such a glamorous evening, with everyone taking loads of photos. And a buffet too. We're keeping the award safe in the office, so no-one drops it." The runners-up in the group category were the Chepstow and Calidoct Crew for their 'Older Persons' Youth Club'. "This group is part of the Community Connections scheme who help get people out of their homes, meeting new people and making new friends," said project manager Miranda Thomason. "For some people, without this group they wouldn't get out and about – in some cases it's the highlight of their week." The Building Bridges Caerwent Crew were winners of the 'Sports and Leisure Volunteer Group' award. Fred Weston of Building Bridges said: "We are approaching our first anniversary and the volunteers have given up their time and effort, without which this project would not have been as successful as it has been." Bridges' deputy director Heather Vincent said: "It's lovely to have the opportunity to say 'thank you' to our volunteers, and show our appreciation and gratitude for all that they do for us."
