SIR,

Rumours abound in Monmouth and they often remain rumours.

However, if the current rumour that a decision has already been taken not to return the market to Agincourt Square but leave it languishing in a wind-swept car park it needs airing.

If this decision has indeed already been taken it has been done without prior consultation with the majority of the stall holders and against the wishes of the business community and the people of Monmouth.

Whoever is responsible for taking the decision should either confirm or deny that a decision has been taken and if it has not to give a firm undertaking that there will be full transparency in the decision-making process.

All relevant parties must be consulted and a full explanation and rationale for any decision must be forthcoming.

It would also be interesting if our elected representatives at local, county and national level would make their views known, unless of course they feel there is either not enough PR mileage in this issue or it could cost them votes at a later election.

Monmouth has been a market town for centuries and it is important that we do not allow decisions which can have a serious impact on the well-being of the town to be taken without the support of the people of Monmouth.
