The restoration on the historic bridge which links Osbaston and Rockfield is underway and is expected to take 10–12 weeks, with completion aimed for Easter 2026.
.Preparatory works over the past fortnight have included cutting back trees to allow safe access, installing security cameras, and putting temporary fencing in place. A hard-standing platform has also been constructed to support the crane and the bridge structure during the restoration period; this will be removed once the project is complete.
The bridge will be restored to its original weight-bearing capacity of three tonnes, in line with listed building requirements. Initially, access will be limited to pedestrians, cyclists, pushchairs, and motor scooters. A future planning application is expected in late 2026 to address vehicle access for those with legal rights of way, with strict measures to prevent general vehicle use.
Councillor Jane Lucas who has been campaigning for the work to get underway said: “This is a fantastic Christmas present for Monmouth, after years of campaigning and community effort, we’re finally seeing real progress on this much-loved bridge.”
"We hope to celebrate with an opening event for local children and residents who have fought tirelessly for this outcome," added Cllr Lucas. "This is more than a bridge—it’s a symbol of community resilience and heritage."
Welsh Water are expected to begin work on the attached water pipe on January 5 2026 with the crane arriving on January 12.
