A man has been found guilty following a collision which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist near the village of Ganarew.

61-year-old Philip Baker of Wonastow, Monmouth was found guilty by a Worcester Crown Court jury of causing death by dangerous driving after a motorcyclist was killed when he hit a tractor and trailer of bales at 9.45pm on Thursday August 11 2022.

26-year-old Steven James Lee from Rhos-on-Sea was riding his motorbike between Ganarew and Monmouth on the A40 when the collision happened.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "When ambulance crews arrived they found a motorcyclist, a man, in a critical condition. Police officers were already on scene providing CPR to the man.

"When ambulance crews commenced emergency treatment, it sadly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased a short time later."

Police inspector Darren Godsall said: "We believe a tractor towing a trailer of bales may have been involved.”

His family paid tribute to “the most wonderful and talented person in the world” and said the trainee pilot was “a true polymath, had almost completed his degree in medicine and was so looking forward to his future.

Sentence will be passed on Baker on Sept 22, 2026.
