John Fletcher was a rare councillor who lived in, understood and cared for his ward. Once an independent, he never formed his own party or trailed around other wards to gain a coveted seat on the town council. He found his home with the Conservatives but voted against them when they flip-flopped on controversial matters.
At their final 2019 meeting they voted for an increased Precept of £396,395, plus £150 payment to each member, even to those who seldom attend. Would John have approved these? He doggedly opposed the positioning of a damaging, outdated playground on Chippenham Town Green, knowing that the fund available should be spent in the new estates which need it.
“Fletch” and his experience will be sadly missed.
