The fur was flying at Monmouth Leisure Centre last Saturday (2nd November) as exhibitors from all over the country groomed their dogs in preparation for competition.

The Chow Chow Club of Wales had chosen the centre at Monmouth for its easy road links and superior facilities to host its 2013 championship show.

The unusual breed originated from China where it is referred to as Songshi Quan, which means puffy lion.

It has a distinctive fluffy coat and is distinguished by its unusual blue-black/ purple tongue and very straight hind legs.

As well as entries from Scotland and Ireland, some more local competitors included David Finlay, pictured right, from St Arvans, treasurer of the Chow Chow Club of Wales with Florence, who has been entered into six shows and has been placed second six times.

The event is a qualifier for Crufts. For more information, go to http://www.chowchow">www.chowchow
