The picturesque setting of Monmouth Showground played host to local runners in the popular Wye Run event this weekend.
"Many people have been inspired by the Olympic games this year and we are delighted by the range of local runners that have turned out to the event", said race director Patrick Smith. "You don't need to be the fastest in the world to still enjoy running here and pick up a medal".
A busy schedule of three competitions took place on Saturday afternoon, 15th September, organised by the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club. The 2km Fun Run was aimed at juniors and families, followed by 6km and 10km races for more experienced and club runners from around the Wye Valley and surrounding area.
Despite the warm conditions and slight headwind on the back straight Peter Ward, representing Chepstow Harriers, won the 10km event in a time of 38 minutes, 12 seconds. Sarah Reece was the first lady across the line in a respectable 50 minutes, 52 seconds.
The proud winners of the special "Golden Shoe" trophies also went to Simon Dimmer and Jo Lee Davies who were the first across the line in the male and female 6km events.
Juniors prizes were taken by Ryan Appleton in the 10km and Max Eckert and Emily Pardington in the 6km, both finishing inside 30 minutes.
"It's great to see runners of all ages take part", said Sian Stroud chair of the Running Club, "our youngest competitor was just three years old, and our oldest was 74".
Proceeds from the run will be donated to two local Monmouth charities, the Savoy Theatre and the Wye Valley NHS Trust Victoria Eye Hospital.
