Monmouth Towns U14s travelled to Risca last Sunday morning up against Griffithstown in the County Cup final, and came away with the county cup after a 4-1 victory.
Griffithstown had gone unbeaten in the season and were cup holders and favourites going into the final, and the Monmouth town team suffered a defeat in the last league game of the season to finish runners up in the East Gwent league.
The game started at a fast pace and both teams had scored in the first 10 minutes, with George Antony opening the scoring for Monmouth.
Chances came at both ends before Monmouth Town's goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic diving save, this rallied the boys and George chipped the ball over the on rushing goalkeeper to give Monmouth a 2-1 half time lead.
Griffithstown then camped in the Monmouth half for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the hard working midfield of Lee Dicks and Ben Jones were giving plenty of support to the central defence of Larrsson Brown and Harri Nash, with Griffithstown becoming more desperate they were now starting to take chances at the back and Andy Beams and Shaun Swann McBride both went close on the counter attack, before George completed his hat trick.
Coaches Ian Meredith and Shelly Swann, brought on fresh legs to ensure the game remained in Monmouth's control, then with only two minutes to go Shaun Swann Mcbride made the game saver with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner of the Griffithstown net, to the delight of the watching Monmouth town supporters.
Monmouth Town goalkeeper was awarded the Man of the Match trophy.
The victory in the county cup now means that Monmouth go forward into the regional finals in West Wales in two weeks' time.
However there's no rest for the U14s, as this weekend's sees the team in with a chance of more silverware as they take on Undy in the league cup final.
Monmouth Town Juniors has its awards night this Friday and with both U12s and U14s winning league and cups, and the clubs U12s, U14s in finals this weekend; this could be the clubs most successful season for many years.
