Lewys Jones re-wrote the record books last weekend by becoming the youngest Chepstow cricketer to get a five wicket haul in a senior league fixture.

Chepstow thirds travelled to play Cardiff Cobras on Saturday on a lovely sunny afternoon. Cardiff won the toss and decided to bat first.

The Cobras were soon in trouble as the opening bowlers Lewis Fawsitt and Owen Paris reduced them to 20-3.

Cardiff steadied the ship and at 48-3 Lewys Jones was entered into the attack.

He went on to remove five Cardiff batsmen – two clean bowled, one LBW and two caught at mid-wicket by his father Rob Jones.

He finished with figures of nine overs, five for 25, making him the youngest chepstow player to achieve the feat.

Lewys only celebrated his 13th birthday less than two weeks ago.

In partnership with Val Singleton, they bowled Cardiff out for just 89 runs.

The innings was interrupted by a serious knee injury to James Bostock and an ambulance had to remove him from the field.

Chepstow batted slowly but surely and managed to reach the target for the loss of five wickets.

Owen Paris was top scorer with 27 not out and Chris Higgs got 19 valuable runs.

They reached the target with some 20 overs to spare. The Cardiff captain awarded the match ball to Lewys at the end of the game to remind him of his wonderful achievement.

Chepstow's 1st XI couldn't match the success of the Thirds, crashing to a 73-run defeat at home to St Fagans.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first.

Rhodri Fawsitt (3-36) removed Chris Thorne and Mansoor Tariq early on to leave St Fagans on 23-2 but opener Chris Lawlor struck 37 off 42 balls and the middle order fired to put the away side in control.

Freddie John hit 47, Owain Hopkins 44 and Andrew Leering 26 as St Fagans posted 206-9 from their 50 overs.

Jason Dobbie finished with figures of 4-25 and Mitchell Harris 2-47.

Tom Smith (27) and David Teague (11) got Chepstow's reply off to a solid start but wickets fell regularly throughout the innings and the home side were bowled out for 133 in 42.2 overs.

Dobbie hit 30 from 37 balls and Jon Roberts hit 22 late on but Chepstow fell short of the target.

For St Fagans, Andrew Leering and Tariq took three wickets each, Tim Holland two and there was a wicket for Owain Hopkins.

There was better news for Chepstow's 2nd XI as a half-century by Scott Bailey helped them to a two-wicket win at St Fagans 2nds.

The home side won the toss and got off to a good start through openers Duncan Mackenzie (53) and Gareth Lennon (20).

Imran Zaheer hit 40 and Patrick Keane an unbeaten 51 as the middle order continued their good work and St Fagans posted 204-5 from their 45 overs.

Dan Price took 2-37 and Josh Tregaskes 2-22 for Chepstow, and there was also a wicket for Jack Farrant.

Chepstow's openers were a match for their opposite numbers with Bailey hitting 50 and Ian Scott making 43.

Sam Jackson was the pick of the rest with 36 and there were contributions from Oliver Thornhill (17), Tim Rees (18) and Justin Thornhill (14 not out).

The visitors reached 206-8 from 42.3 overs in a close finish.

There were wickets for St Fagans bowlers Phil Makinson, D Hopkins and Clive Franklin, and two each for Lennon and Zaheer.
