FOURTEEN local youngsters competed in the Central Zone Schools Championships in Cardiff last weekend.

Having qualified from the Welsh Championships they were competing against schools from the West Midlands, East Midlands and Eastern regions.

India Marshall from Monmouth Comprehensive School came fifth in the Under 19 Elite section, but unfortunately due to illness the Elite Under 19 team were not able to compete. In the Elite Under 11 group, Emily Bevan from Kymin View Primary School came seventh, and Halle Unsworth from Llandogo Primary came eighth.

In the Intermediate section Tomos Rees from Osbaston C of E School came fifth and Lawrence Johnson from the Monmouth School Grange came sixth. Tomos’ score was only 0.6 less than third place, which equates to 0.1 from each of the six judges scores, meaning he just missed out on qualification for the British Championships.

In the Under 14 age group Robin Skailes from Monmouth School came ninth, and Erin Williams, representing Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, came twelfth.

The Under 19 team, consisting of Darcy Birkett, Taryn Birkett, Zoe Lambert and Laura Pritchard from the Monmouth Comprehensive School came fourth and the Under 14 team, Kaitlyn Newman, Bethan Carlton and Kirsty Maylin, came seventh.
