A Monmouth sprinter has become the Welsh champion for his age group in two athletics events.
Last Sunday (5th February), the Cardiff International Athletics Stadium was the venue for the Welsh under 17 indoor championships, with athletes competing from all over Wales.
Ryan Lee, a student at Monmouth Comprehensive School, had entered the 60m and the 200m events, which were well represented with 22 athletes entered for the 60m and 15 for the 200m.
Ryan's day got underway with heat one of the 200m, in which he had a good win in a time of 23.05 seconds – a personal best.
The final was different altogether with Ryan leading the race. At the 150m mark the Cardiff athlete was right up with Ryan, so in the last 30m he kicked hard and won by a metre in a time of 23.11 seconds to become Welsh champion.
In the 60m Ryan was far more relaxed and won his heat in convincing fashion in a time of 7.30 seconds.
The final was very close and at the half way stage Ryan was in third place, then he pushed really hard and crossed the line in first place just two hundredths of a second ahead of the Cardiff runner in an identical time from his heat of 7.30 seconds.
This is a fantastic achievement for Ryan, who next runs in Birmingham at the Alexander Stadium, where he will compete in the England National age group championships and where the opposition will be even stronger.
