A SCHOOL rugby master is delighted to have seen two of his former charges make their professional debuts in recent weeks.

Paul Morris, master-in-charge at Monmouth School for Boys, watched last year’s 1st XV captain Theo Mayell (pictured left) make his bow for Worcester Warriors at Gloucester two weeks ago.

He was also pitchside last week to see vice-captain Joe Jenkins (right) turn out for Bristol Bears against Exeter Chiefs in the same Premiership Cup competition, with the centre having made his debut earlier in a pre-season game against the Dragons at a packed Rodney Parade in Newport.

Sadly for Theo, as reported in last week’s Beacon, Warriors went into administration five days after the back-row forward’s pro debut, leaving players in limbo and the club suspended from the Premiership, although there are hopes new buyers can be found.

But their former school coach said: “It was fantastic to be present to watch both boys run out to make their professional debuts.

“Theo didn’t appear fazed at all by the large crowd or the presence of several internationals directly opposite him.

“And it was great to see Joe take the field again after his battle with injury over the past year.

“The biggest compliment I could pay both players is that they both looked at home in this environment.

“They have been, and I am sure will continue to be, outstanding ambassadors for rugby at Monmouth School for Boys and we wish them every success.”

England U18 squad member Joe, who lives near Chepstow, looked comfortable in the outside-centre berth and produced a host of nice touches and made some strong tackles in his pre-season match.

He followed this up with a fine performance for Bears in the Premiership Cup against a more experienced Chiefs side, scoring two tries in a 35-20 defeat.

BristolLive posted: “The centre was impressive in everything he did, showing an array of effective tackles in defence and scored two superb tries, one with a powerful finish and the second thanks to a deceptive dummy.

“He could be some player and is a massively exciting prospect based on this display and it is easy to see why he has been getting good reviews on loan at Championship side Hartpury this season.”

Theo, who was aso called up into the England U18 squad last season, faced a very strong Gloucester side containing four internationals, a week last Wednesday, when he ran out in front of 9,000 supporters at Kingsholm. Despite suffering a 49-21 defeat, Theo gave a brilliant display and shone with his intelligent support running and fearless play.
