In a game full drama on a lovely sunny day at Blestium Street Stadium it was the away team from Mid Wales who grabbed a late equaliser as both teams had to settle for a share of the points, writes Scott Russell.
It was a positive start from the Kingfishers who looked likely to score early on.
Veteran Rob Laurie came close with a couple of headers as Wells battled to keep the score line goalless.
As the first half was drawing to an end, a freekick given away by Town allowed the visitors to swing in a free kick and saw an unmarked Daryl Nicholls head Llandrindod into a shock lead in the 43rd minute.
Only three minutes into the second half it was local lad Lewis Davies who hit the ground running with an incredible strike from 40 yards out.
He hit it with the outside of his foot, leaving the Wells keeper and his teammates thinking the ball was sailing well wide of the goal only to see it curl beautifully into the side netting to make it 1-1, many saying it was a goal of the season strike from the young full back.
Only minutes later it was nearly a second for Monmouth as Laurie saw his shot come off the post from six yards and other home chances went begging.
Then in the 61st minute Davies charged down the opposition in his own half only to see his tackle come shot cut through the air like a knife through butter, over the stranded Wells keeper and into the back of the net causing absolute scenes from the Monmouth players, coaches and fans.
For large periods the home team were in control of the game but with only one goal in it Wells were always able to still get something from the game.
Indeed that moment came after a double slip by Arron Davies allowed Kieran McCarley to nip in after what was going to be a comfortable clearance, McCarley was gifted the chance to be one on one with Wood in the home goal.
With his first initial shot well saved by Monmouth’s number one, the Wells player was able to pick up the rebound and score into an empty net against the run of play.
Scott Russell added; “We should have won this game but again we didn’t take our chances and allowed Llandrindod a chance to get back into it.
‘‘It was a slip by Azzy but he has been outstanding for us this season, the game should have been dead and buried before the slip so I wont blame him for this, his foot gave way and he lost his balance.
‘‘It was just one of those things that happens.
We collectively only have ourselves to blame for not getting three points.
‘‘ I’ve seen the two best goals this season and perhaps in my three years at Monmouth with Lewis’s strikes today.
‘‘He was on the bench to start the game but he responded exactly how I’d want any player to coming on and his two goals today were so, so good.
‘‘The players are disappointed not to win but they know they played well so the team spirit is still high.”
