Ever since last summer's London Olympics, there has been much talk of 'legacy'.

Could we, as a nation, build on the undoubted success of the Games and secure a sporting heritage for future generations?

But despite the chatter, we all know only actions will help build that legacy.

In Monmouthshire, there is now a scheme in place with a very simple yet ambitious aim: 'Every child hooked on sport for life'.

With this goal in mind, young ambassadors are being recruited across the county – young people empowered to become role models and leaders through sport, encouraging and inspiring others to take part.

In practice, the Young Ambassadors programme takes the form of a four-tiered system of platinum, gold, silver or 'Adistar', and bronze ambassadors.

The bronze programme has already been rolled out across half of the county, with 14 Year 6 pupils from Monmouth and 10 from Chepstow trained in recent weeks.

The youngsters, who attended training sessions at Monmouth Comprehensive and Chepstow School, will be working within their primary schools to implement games and activities at lunchtimes, increase participation in PE and generally be active role models for their peers.

The bronze scheme will be rolled out in Abergavenny and Caldicot in September, while three students at Chepstow School have already been identified as Adistar Ambassadors.

Marie Zorab, Katie Jane-Priest and Ashleigh Fenton will be responsible for 5x60 promotion within the school and increasing participation in other school sports.

Geraint Roberts is the sports development officer for Chepstow and one of four in Monmouthshire.

"The idea behind the young ambassadors programme is that ideas and information cascades down through the children," he said.

"The 5x60 promotion is about getting young people active for 60 minutes, five days a week."

It also focuses on getting people involved in sports that are outside the curriculum – the perfect excuse to try one of those sports you enjoyed watching during the Olympics and havn't got round to trying.

In time, two Year 11 students or sixth formers will be recruited as gold ambassadors with a university student likely to fill the county-wide platinum ambassador role.

The young ambassador programme is led by the Youth Sport Trust and back by the organisers of London 2012.
