Monmouth Tri Club member Phil Tilley, pictured on the right, is completing a cycle training session with the support of fellow member Tim. As one of Monmouth's Ironmen in training, who is approaching the magic age of 50, Phil has challenged himself to Ironman 70.3 at Wimbleball Exmoor on 15th June 2014. Having undertaken his first triathlon three years ago he thought this year should be a special one. To kick-start his training programme Phil completed a weekend in the Algarve at a Tri training camp TiTrainingHarder, run by an 'old' Monmouth Tri Club Member. This allowed Phil to do some fitness tests, analyse his swim and run techniques and conclude the camp with a 100 mile cycle climbing to 7,000 feet. On 2nd March Phil completed the Newport Half-Marathon, he was really pleased with his time of just over 1hr 40 mins The course is much flatter than Wimbleball but it sets a good marker. The demands of the race for Phil is a swim in open water 1.2 miles then a bike ride of 56 miles and finishing with a 13.1 miles run all in the grounds of Wimbleball Lake Country Park, Exmoor. Phil believes his major challenge will be fitting training around a professional career with travel and family commitments, all necessitating a flexible training session and making the most of each one.
