As part of an on-going project run by Monmouth & District Angling Society to encourage young anglers into the sport, several enthusiastic youngsters, under the guidance of the Monmouth Youth Service, were given the opportunity to try their hand at fishing. For many of the youngsters it was their first time. The session was held on one of the clubs many still-waters and even the odd rain shower did not dampen their enthusiasm to catch a few fish. Several of the clubs committee members were on hand to coach and supervise the group and they were soon confident enough to make their first casts of the day. It wasn't long before they started catching several obliging rudd that fell to simple float fishing tactics. For some of the beginners it was the first time they had handled a fish and they were shown the importance of fish care and how to return them safely. Some of the more experienced anglers from the Youth Centre fished a quiet corner of the lake and were rewarded with several small hard fighting carp. None of the group went away empty handed, taking with them new skills in fishing as well as prizes and items of tackle given out on the day. This is an on-going project being run by Monmouth Angling Society and any youngster who would like to participate in future events should contact The Monmouth Youth Service or Monmouth Angling Club.
