MONMOUTH Squash Club's 1st team have been crowned as champions of the South Wales Leagues Division 3 East.

This is an outstanding achievement by all the players and club members, with the team only losing three matches in the second half of the season.

Club coach Tej Saran said: "Credit has to go to everyone involved with the club, it has grown from strength to strength in the last 12 months and will continue to grow in the future and achieve even higher targets."

Both the 2nd and 3rd team held their own in their respective leagues and look to push for promotion in the forthcoming season.

Moving away from league squash, over the last three months a handicap squash tournament has been played by the majority of those involved in the squash club.

There were some outstanding skills on display and close fought matches throughout the competition. The finals day saw Alan Powell take on Rob Matthews in the plate final with Doug Rogers playing Avtar Saran in the main final.

The plate final was a very close fought match with some huge rallies and excellent pickups by both players.

The match was evenly poised at 2-2 until Rob Matthews claimed the final game 15-13, to win the match 3-2.

The main final was also a spectacle with some great shot selection and ball control by both finalists, with eventual winner Doug Rogers winning the match 3-1 – however the score line didn't reflect how close the match was.

Ladies squash has also seen a significant rise in new players. Ladies training sessions are run every Saturday morning from 9-10.30am.

Monmouth Ladies have recently formed a new team, which plays other ladies teams around south Wales. A recent result saw Monmouth Ladies beat Cardiff's David Lloyds Ladies 3-2 in a thrilling match.
