AFTER a successful league campaign which saw Monmouth Town FC under-12s claim the league title in mid-April, the conclusion of the under-12s' season saw them up against Undy in the cup final.

The Monmouth team had home advantage and a large crowd gathered on Chippenham Fields last Saturday morning for a thrilling encounter.

The young Kingfishers started much the stronger and came close with efforts from Sam Swingwood and Oli Moss in the first half.

Undy were restricted to the odd break away but Emyr Pullen in the Monmouth goal was never brought into any real action and the tie was still evenly balanced going into the second half.

After the restart, Monmouth were on top for the majority of the time once again with the Undy goalkeeper keeping them in the game with a series of fine saves.

Then when it looked like it was not going to be Monmouth's day, Callum Wood poked home from close range to the delight of the home fans.

This spurred Undy forward and, despite there being no real danger, there was a mix up with Unsworth and Pullen and the Undy striker stole the ball, scoring to send the tie into extra time.

More chances came and went, and both teams hit the woodwork as the clock ticked closer to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Then, with only minutes to go, Monmouth had a free kick on the edge of the box.

Undy had every player back defending but Wood's precise free kick sent the ball around the wall and off the inside of the post to send the home team and supporters jumping of joy.

The final whistle blew minutes later for an historic double for the under-12s Monmouth team.

Monmouth Town's other competitive teams were also involved in cup final action last weekend, but were unable to follow in the under-12s' footsteps, when the joint Monmouth and Usk team (MonUsk), went down 5-2 against Mardy, and the under-14s, who are Gwent County Cup winners, could not overcome league winners Undy, who won the double in the under-14s' league.

However the under-14s will get the chance to represent the club and county in the Welsh regional finals this weekend in Aberystwyth.

The under-16s were also in cup action but were still at the semi-final stage, and a close 2-1 victory put them into the under-16s final, to cap an impressive season for Monmouth's junior teams, with all four sides reaching their respective cup finals.
