IT was hard going for Monmouth under-9's at the Sports Ground on Sunday as they went down to an 81 run defeat at the hands of title chasing Wormelow.

Skipper Jake Teague won the toss and elected to bat, but saw opening pair Sam Brennan and Vena-Rose Saunders unable to maintain their recent good form against some high quality bowling.

Progress was slow throughout the innings and Monmouth posted a total of just 208, which was never likely to be enough.

Only the captain and Hattie Brennan were able to make any headway against some excellent fielding from the visitors.

Monmouth started well in the field, but catches were again dropped, with Patrick Stubbs and Catrin Watkin the unlucky bowlers.

William Tatham had the outstanding statistics, with 3-11 from his three overs.

Despite a big effort from William Wilton and Megan Maguire, replacing injured sister Lauren, Wormelow passed Monmouth's total with ease.

Coach Liam Stubbs acknowledged that his team were beaten by the better side, but praised his players for their energy and commitment, giving particular encouragement to five year old JP Tatham who was a last minute replacement.

Monmouth, sponsored by Ancre Hill Vineyards, are still in the hunt for third place in the table and face Canon Frome on Sunday.
