A new season has started in the Gwent Newport & Pontypool District Premier League.

This season, the Druids have a new captain, No 8 Nick Philips, who took the Druids away to Gwernyfed.

Unfotunately, due to a serious injury to loose head prop Paul King, who broke his leg, both captains and the referee agreed to abandon the game after 30 minutes.

Paul is due to be operated on and everyone at Monmouth RFC wish him a speedy recovery.

Before the game was abandoned, the Druids were leading 10 -5 with a debutant try from second row Gareth Morgan, who was playing his first senior game, and with the conversion and a penalty from outside half Aaron Price.

The Druids were the stronger of the two teams with more of the territory and possession and put together a number of phases which had Gwernyfed on the back foot.

In the pack Nick Philips did a few of his trade mark bullish runs and Mitch Gleed winning good line out ball enabled scrumhalf Nathan Cocker to get the backline moving.

With a number of players yet to return to play, captain Philips believes the Druids have good all round strength and the potential for a successful season.

Next Saturday, the Druids are at home to Risca 2.30pm kick off.
