Two goals from Nick Harrhy on his return to Monmouth Sports Ground were enough to book the Kingfishers' place in the last 16 of the Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League Cup.

The first came with Town's first attack of the game as MacDonald played in Elliot Ford, who rolled the ball along the six yard box and Harrhy was on hand to apply the finishing touch.

For the rest of the half the Kingfishers, sponsored by WyeMedia, struggled to get into the game and find their passing rhythm but still looked a little more dangerous in advanced areas with MacDonald getting some strikes away and Ford occasionally finding room to take on his defenders.

Ton seemed to have the opposite problem as their neat possession and passing more often than not came to nothing, although Lee Williams, standing in for the injured Keiron Blackburn, did have to make sharp stop low to his left.

Jacob Guy and Rob Laurie, standing in for the injured Evans, dealt comfortably with most of what Ton created and Spence and Davies were barely troubled down the flanks.

That said, it was a strangely subdued game with both sides lacking any real energy and the game as a whole played at a low tempo.

The introduction in the second half of Ashley Ford, returning after a few weeks in the reserves, allowed Town to keep the ball better while Compton added a bit of zip going forward but the second half followed pretty much the same format with Ton keeping the ball and looking for openings that weren't going to arrive.

They did have the ball in the net after a back pass from Elliot Ford was superbly curled in early in the half but it was mysteriously chalked off as an adamant linesman insisted that there had been some infringement.

Compton stung the keeper's hands with a rasping drive on the hour and Williams again was called into action to palm away an angled drive but it wasn't until Harrhy got his second, capitalising on a spill by the keeper and tapping home, that Monmouth secured their passage.

Town's midweek attempt to top the Welsh League had fallen to a late Taffs Well equaliser but they remain unbeaten in nine games, still in contention in all three cups and lie sixth in Division One just three points off top spot.

The reserve team were also maintaining their 100 per cent record in a cup match at Monmouthshire rivals Goytre with Matty Johns making his senior debut in goal.

Another brace from Craig Lewis, two from Liam Wilson and a free kick winner from club captain Andrew Smith were the highlights in a 5-4 win.

The Town, whose match day catering is provided by the Raduni restaurant, are at home again this Saturday with a game against Bridgend Town (kick off 2pm) before continuing their Welsh Cup adventure with a second round game away at Newbridge on Wye.

The club are arranging supporters transport for the day out, leaving at 10am and arriving back in Monmouth at 10pm.
