Monmouth Town retained its place at the top of the Welsh League table with a big win at current Champions West End. The win consigned West End to Division Two just a year after lifting the title, as two goals apiece for Dan MacDonald and Eliot Evens were complemented by goals from Nick Harrhy and Daniel Clare. The scoreline however, doesn't tell the whole story as West End were for the most part decent enough and took a surprise lead on 16 minutes latching on to a loose pass and the home striker bending one in off a post. Town hit back immediately as Evans finished off a spilled MacDonald free kick and the remainder of the half was a blur of goal mouth action as the rain and chances poured and the game opened up. Harrhy flicked in a great strike from Evans who buried another chance and MacDonald scored direct from a corner kick before Blackburn stopped a couple of clear openings as the puddles developed around the pitch. 4 -1 at half time and there was just a small matter of increasing goal difference but town managed to spurn a number of good chances, had three goals disallowed and MacDonald still had a chance to miss a penalty after Harrhy was brought down clear on goal. Town did increase their lead with a thumping header from Daniel Clare and a smooth finish from MacDonald before a defensive mix up let in West End for an implausible second goal. Town were in action last night (Tuesday) against relegation battlers Pontardawe knowing that two wins ought to be enough to lift the title for the first time in their 138 year history but Taffs Well's fifth consecutive win at Aberdare meant they also travelled to West End last night where a win will set up a must-win last game against Cwmbran Celtic on the final Saturday of the season (10th May). With Steve Jenkins back in charge after his heroics at Hereford you would hope that any luck Jenkins can bring with him won't be needed.
