A SUPERB century from Josh Grey powered Monmouth Cricket Club to a crushing 202-run home win over Dinas Powys in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League Division Three. Man-of-the-match Grey struck a magnificent 107 and shared a 193-run second-wicket stand with the classy Matthew Jones (75) as Monmouth rattled up 320-6 at the Sports Ground. Left-arm spinner Jonathan Jones then snapped up 5-33 and Grey held three excellent catches as Monmouth shot out Dinas Powys for just 118 in the 37th over. Monmouth have now climbed to third place in the table, just behind second-placed Dinas Powys with the first-half of the division's fixtures completed. Monmouth, who are sponsored by JD Wetherspoon, are in action at the Sports Ground, once again, this Saturday against seventh-placed Vale (1pm start). Grey cracked 13 boundaries in his maiden league century at Monmouth last Saturday after Dinas had won the toss and elected to field. Jones also made the visitors' bowlers toil on another excellent pitch as he collected six boundaries and looked firmly on course for his first century of the summer. Grey and Jones demoralised the opposition with quick running and well-placed shots before they were eventually parted at 211-2. Matt Lovett blasted four fours and two sixes in a quick-fire 39, Tej Saran struck an unbeaten 34 and skipper Ben Turner made 11 as Monmouth posted a formidable total from their 50 overs. After the interval, Neil Smith (2-36 from 10 overs), Saran (0-16 from six) and Alim Hansraj (1-25 from 10) put the brakes on the visiting batsmen. Jack Preston (31), Brychan Tudor (18), Ian Southwell (16) and Nathan Piddock (13) made contributions for Dinas but they fell behind the required run-rate and lost wickets. Jonathan Jones ripped apart the visitors' innings with help from wicketkeeper Jon Despontin, who claimed a sharp catch and made a stumping, while Turner took 1-5. Hansraj also took a catch while an outstanding piece of fielding from Lovett's quick pick up and accurate throw instigated a run-out and helped Monmouth wrap up the victory. A heavily depleted Monmouth 2nds crashed to a 165-run defeat at Brecon 2nds in Division Three 2nd XI. An unbeaten 45 from Aubrey Stubbs was the highlight of Monmouth's comprehensive defeat last Saturday against their old Marches League adversaries, who included veteran spinner Peter Owens. R Thomas (105 not out) and Price (93) propelled Brecon to 282-6 from 45 overs despite the efforts of Martin Newell (2-54), Luke Bowley (1-35), Ali Hay (1-24), Jake Bowley (1-46) and debutant Sam Williams (1-61). Stubbs' defiant knock helped Monmouth to a respectable 117, with Newell (30) and Jake Bowley (12) also showing some resistance. The club are indebted to Steve Gale and young prospects Ben Pilot, Sam Williams and Jordan Suttie, who all stepped in to play for the team at the 11th hour. Monmouth's 2nd team, sponsored by Ancre Hill Vineyard, are scheduled to travel to Vale 2nd in the league this Saturday. Meanwhile, Monmouth Cricket Club are hosting a prestigious Welsh women's fixture this Friday. Wales Women are facing the Army Women at the Sports Ground in a 40-overs-a-side fixture, starting at 11.30am.
