IN their third appearance at Henley Royal Regatta since founding school rowing 27 years ago, the school’s top boys’ boat of Tom Smith, Louis Proctor, Tom Brice and Sam Morgan won a superb first round race against Australian schoolboys, St Josephs from Brisbane in fine style, coming home five boat lengths ahead on the historic course. This was their first heat win at the Regatta and was made even more special by the presence of head teacher, Mr Davies, in the motor launch following the race. Their coach, Mr Cowton, believes they will return to the event next year even faster, with a strong squad of rowers coming through.

In the few days since the Regatta, MCS has had a record seven rowers selected for the Wales team at the Home International Regatta to be held in Cork, Ireland. No club has had more rowers selected for the team. Those selected were Sam Morgan and Tom Brice from the Henley Regatta crew, with squad mate Leon Handley also having a very strong trial. MCS also has a large squad of girls, comprising over 60 per cent of the club and Katie Kearsey, Arwen van der Horst, Mia Boycott and Josie Harrison will make up two crews for the prestigious Home International Regatta. With five of the selected students returning to school next year, Mr Cowton’s belief in their promise looks sound!
