Following a humbling defeat at The Kendleshire Golf Club in April, The Rolls of Monmouth vice-captain, Mike Maguire, had the opportunity for revenge in the home fixture on Saturday 4th August.
He opted for experienced match players from the large pool of members available to him but this proved a bad choice as, once again, stronger opponents crushed the Rolls team.
Club captain Dick Bull, who was unavailable for the away fixture, led the way with partner Phil Riou but they were soundly beaten five and three in the opening fourball.
The pairing of Tim Barker and Martin Press along with the usually reliable Roly Bulman and Russell Webb failed to take the home advantage, while Paul Mitchell and very late visiting substitute Gareth Wilson were comfortably despatched three and two.
The one ray of light on the day shone brightly from Graham Holder and Steve Scott. The pair, who had suffered unfair criticism for their heavy defeat in the away fixture, trounced the Kendleshire pairing of Chick and Dear seven and six to record the only victory of the day for The Rolls. More remarkable still was Holder's determination to represent the club just a week before major knee surgery.
Mike Maguire and Nigel James managed to valiantly hold their opponents to a halved game but the match had long since been lost by a margin of four-and-a-half to one-and-a-half.
