WYE and Usk Foundation (WUF) Trustee Tony Norman has been coordinating litter removal from the Wye for 10 years now, clearing 900 miles of river bank and shifting more than 100 tons of rubbish so far.
The various tributaries – Ithon, Irfon, Lugg, Arrow, Monnow and all the smaller ones – have been cleared, and on the main river, WUF had worked their way down from the source to Luggsmouth by May last year.
This year the Foundation is tackling the stretch from Luggsmouth down to Chepstow and need all the help they can get. The project will run from the beginning of February until the end of April.
They would like to find beat owners, fishing and canoe clubs, gillies or individuals who would be prepared to clear "their'"stretch and can provide litter pickers and bags, and can arrange for removal of the rubbish.
Groups of volunteers will be going out on a regular basis to clear those areas not signed up. Many local/walking/canoe groups have also committed to this year's programme.
WUF would also welcome volunteers who would join them on organised days to help keep clear all the other areas, hoping that by the end of April, the Wye will be clean as far as rubbish goes.
