Caerleon 0-1 Monmouth Town
A solitary 22nd minute goal from Monmouth Town's flying winger Elliot Ford, latching on to a superb throughball from Dan MacDonald, was enough to take all three points for the Kingfishers and move them up to fourth place in the Welsh League.
Ford (pictured, above right) had earlier passed up two similar opportunities and Caerleon's Olly Beckett also spurned a chance in a game short on goalmouth action but longer on honest endeavour, particularly from the home team who despite lacking any real creativity made the Kingfishers work hard for their third straight win.
On a cold day at Cold Bath Road, Town started the brighter and throughout Harrhy and MacDonald showed flashes of quality and invention but the defensive quarter of Guy, Evans, Ashley Ford and the returning Davies deserved their plaudits for denying any real openings as Blackburn had a quiet day at the office.
Some baffling refereeing kept it interesting for the travelling supporters but the second half was one to forget.
So much so, it already has been apart from the introduction on the hour of the lively Dean Lee, the Town's new signing from Cinderford Town.
Lee joins two more additions to the Kingfishers squad along with former Middlesbrough and Hereford trainee Chris Hyde and Safian Skupinski, who made some waves at FC Kalisz in Poland but is now settled in Newport.
On a remarkable weekend for the Town's footballers, the reserves also won 1-0 with a free-kick goal from Dean Palmer (pictured, left) to move to second in the league behind Cardiff Met University, who visit in a fortnight in a top-of-the-table clash, while the Under 19s youth squad also kept a clean sheet – the second of the weekend – for young Matthew Jones in a 5-0 win over Caldicot Town.
George Ryley (two) James Lee, Ben Murphy and Dan Barnard got the goals.
On Saturday Town, sponsored by WyeMedia with match catering by Raduni Restaurant, are at home in the first of three fixtures that could set up an April title challenge as Gwent rivals Cwmbran Celtic come to town in a 2.30pm kick off.
