Monmouth Town Reserves 1 Caerleon 4
MONMOUTH Reserves lost at home to Caerleon in a match that was far closer than the final score suggested.
The home side were behind from the start, with Caerleon scoring in the first few minutes after a dropped cross led to a scramble in the six yard box leading to a goal. A few minutes later the defence was eluded and with the scoreline at 2-0 it was going to be a hard afternoon to get anything out of the game.
Town did not give in though, and had several goal mouth scrambles but somehow got nothing out of it. Players and spectators watched in disbelief as a looping cross hit the crossbar and other chances weren’t taken. Despite being two goals down, it looked like at least a draw was possible.
Monmouth pressed and eventually got their reward as they got a good goal back. Pushing for a point, they went looking for a second but Caerleon held out, riding their luck at times until the inevitable happened.
Caerleon sent a ball down the middle which goalkeeper Lee had to come out to clear. Choosing to hack the ball clear, the ball did what it does when things aren’t going your way: Lee missed and it was 3-1.
After that, although they chased, there was no way back for Monmouth and Caerleon scored again to make the final score 4-1.
