East Gwent Senior League Division 1 and 2
MATHERN Reserves A and Underwood SC A top Division 1 after Mathern’s 9-1 victory over Caldicot Castle gave them the edge despite their rivals beating Severn Bridge 7-1.
Mathern’s goals came from the division’s top scorer Dan Tyler (2), Rob Wood (2), Tom Watson, Jordan Barrett, Ryan Guscott and two more from Kyle Gettings whose goals for the club’s reserves team earned him a call-up.
Manager Lee Baker said his men played good football throughout.
“It was another good team win,” he said.
“We controlled the game and scored some great team goals. Onwards and upwards, there’s still more to come.”
Underwood’s scorers were Sam Leighton (2), Kyle Harrison, Matthew Seabourne, Taylor Gregory, Josh Downing and Tom Turner in a match which boss Craig Johnson said showed his team’s class.
“Playing against a team that likes to battle, our ability, class and fitness showed in the second half.”
Third-placed Severn Tunnel were 10-2 victors at Tintern Abbey and Undy Athletic edged out Chepstow Town 3-2.
Andrew Peacock, one of Undy’s management team, said he felt his men were the better team throughout, despite going 2-0 down at one point.
“The lads showed great spirit to force the comeback,” he added.
“In particular, the three 16-year-olds – Dan Roberts, Sam Richardson and Kenan Hegarty – we had in the side, were excellent.
“We made some changes for the second half and piled the pressure on and in the end I felt we deserved the win.”
In Division 2, Underwood B triumphed 7-1 at home to Sudbrook for whom Marc Bradley scored while Underwood’s goals were scored by Jahmal Johnson (3), Joey Leighton, Elliott Camfield, David Rees and Jake Price.
Severn Tunnel C lost 7-0 at home to Chepstow Town B with Matt Early (3), Dean Barnett (2), Matt Owen and Steve Pattison finding the net.
Severn Tunnel B drew 2-2 at home with Portskewett & Sudbrook and Thornwell B lost 4-0 at home to Caldicot Castle B.
