A LATE Brad Phillips goal rescued a point for the Kingfishers at a wet Woodfield Road on Saturday, as they drew 2-2 with New Inn in the Gwent Premier top tier, reports JAMES TOWNLEY.
The two sides often host tight and tense games, and their weekend match-up was no different.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 24th minute after being awarded a penalty, Benjamin Williams converting from the spot.
Then seven minutes before half-time, recent addition Phillips equalised with his first goal for the Kingfishers in only his second game, making it 1-1 at the break.
But Williams grabbed his second to make it 2-1 to New inn on 63 minutes, and they looked headed for victory until Phillips popped up with his second in the 88th minute, with the draw leaving Kingfishers third.
First team manager Sam Palmer said: “It’s a difficult place to come and play football, and the conditions didn’t help. But credit to the lads for sticking at it and getting a deserved point.”
The 2nds lost 5-2 at home to Caldicot 3rds though, Callum Wilding and Lamin Ndure the scorers.
The 1sts host PILCS in the Gwent County Motors Cup on Saturday (September 27), having reached the final last season before losing on penalties to Cwmbran Town, with the 2nds away to Undy 3rds.
Elsewhere, Usk beat visitors Oak 2-1 thanks to two Jordan Loydall strikes, while Glascoed were in seventh heaven, winning 7-1 away to Pontnewynydd 2nds, Gary Phillips with a hat-trick and Andrew Lewis a brace.
Redbrook Rovers also drew 6-6 at home to Ruardean Hill 2nds, Larsson Brown and Joe Stephens with braces, while Thornwell 2nds drew 2-2 with derby visitors Chepstow 2nds.
