The Kingfishers returned to the Chippenham Sports ground for a Welsh League 2 game against Llwydcoed AFC following a 6-1 win last week against West End.

Before the game the visitors sat towards the bottom of the division, with Monmouth hoping to consolidate their third position in the league with a home win.

Llwydcoed kicked off in damp but dry conditions. The game started with the opponents pressing Monmouth’s goal and as a result were awarded corners but were unable to convert to goals. A break by Monmouth saw a good through ball being gathered by Elliott Ford who scored a superb goal to put the Kingfishers ahead.

Pressure continued from Llwydcoed with a number of corners being awarded to them but they were unable to breach the Kingfishers goal.

The game continued in an open contest with fouls being committed by both sets of players, but it was not until just before half time that yellow cards were issued to players on both teams.

The second half again started with pressure from Llwydcoed with Monmouth counter attacking, which finally paid off with a penalty being awarded to Monmouth. The spot kick was well converted by Leo Ross. Almost immediately after that score a penalty was awarded to Llwydcoed which was converted to make the score 2-1.

The game then became very niggly with both sets of players committing fouls, but eventually Monmouth regained their two goal lead with a fine strike from Luke Williams.

Monmouth made it 4-1 with a scrambled goal scored by Perys Pullen, but despite late pressure from the Kingfishers, Llwydcoed were awarded a corner and the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line by the referee, despite protests by the home side.

The match was played out for a final score of 4-2 to Monmouth.

The match was attended by a good crowd and provided entertaining football. Monmouth’s next home game is on Saturday 9th February against Aberbargoed Buds. Kick off is 2pm.
