Lucas Cwmbran 1 Monmouth Town 4

THE Kingfishers provided a second-half comeback to secure a 4-1 win at basement side Lucas Cwmbran amid blustery Storm Amy winds, reports JAMES TOWNLEY

Despite being behind at half-time after a fourth-minite own goal, a brace from Dan Macdonald and strikes from Brad Phillips and Lamin Ndure saw the Kingfishers take all three points to go second in the table.

It was a disastrous start for the visitors though, with Rob Laurie misjudging a backwards pass to goalkeeper Ethan Ross to gift Lucas the lead.

Monmouth saw a win as a must going in against the pointless hosts, but despite plenty of opportunities, including winger Iwan Mooney hitting the post and a penalty shout turned down, it was still 1-0 at the break.

Phillips had proved a threat in the opening 45 minutes however, and it was no surprise when the No 9 netted the equaliser just three minutes into the second period.

It was a good run from Lamin Ndure on the left side, who made an instant impact off the bench providing the assist.

Ndure himself almost grabbed the lead after a promising cross was delivered into the box, but a great save from Luke Casagrande denied him one-on-one.

But Lucas Harris then made a run down the right on the hour-mark, and his cross found Macdonald who headed home for the lead and some relief for managers Sam Palmer and Jack Alderdice on the sidelines.

Just nine minutes later, Macdonald stepped up again to fire home from a free-kick for 3-1.

And five minutes from time, a great ball from Harris found Ndure to slot home for 4-1.

The hosts got the ball in the net in the dying minutes, but it was disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper Ross, with victory lifting the Kingfishers into second behind leaders RTB Ebbw Vale after 11 games.

Next up for Monmouth are Pill AFC at home this Saturday (October 11), where they will hope to keep the momentum going.

The 2nds are away the same afternoon to Thornwell Red & White 2nds in the East Gwent Benevolent Cup.
